Facts and History

Stone: Rose quartz

Colour: Pink

Month: January

Birthstone: Capricorn

Chakra: Heart

Rose quartz is a pink, translucent variety of quartz and is sometimes known as pink quartz, although it can range from pale to reddish or purplish pink. It's named after its colouring, which is caused by trace amounts of impurities in quartz crystal - the most common ones being manganese, iron and titanium. Colour also varies depending on location, as rose quartz can be found in multiple locations around the world including Brazil, Madagascar, India, Africa and the USA.

Rated at 7 on the Mohs scale of mineral hardness, rose quartz is durable enough for daily wear, making it a popular choice for jewellery and decorative items. As one of the most common varieties of quartz, it's fairly inexpensive.

Evidence from archaeological sites suggests that rose quartz dates back to around 7000 BC in Ancient Mesopotamia, but it was officially discovered in the 1880s.

Crystal Properties

Rose quartz has been used as a stone of love throughout the ages across many different cultures.

Mental and Emotional

Rose quartz opens the heart to give and receive unconditional love, inner healing and peace. It can improve friendships, restore harmony and trust in relationships and help to develop deeper bonds. Its gentle vibrations provide emotional healing by dispelling negativity and aiding the acceptance of past situations.

Rose quartz lends comfort in times of grief, mourning and hardship. It also stimulates imagination and creativity.

Physical

Rose quartz is believed to strengthen the heart and circulatory system. It's used to hasten recovery from illness or injury and heal scars. As a feminine stone, it's recommended to support pregnancy, fertility and the reproductive system.

Spiritual

As a heart chakra stone, rose quartz cleanses emotions to awaken the heart to the purest form of love, nourishing the spirit and raising vibrations. It attunes the spirit to the universe, allowing one to connect with the hearts of others and all of nature.

Myths and Beliefs

The Ancient Egyptians associated rose quartz with beauty and valued it for its anti-ageing properties. They made facial masks and elixirs with the stone to keep a clear complexion and prevent wrinkles.

It was linked to the goddess, Isis, of magic, motherhood, fertility, healing and protection. Rose quartz jewellery and artefacts were often buried with the dead, signifying its importance in guiding the soul through the afterlife.

The Romans and Greeks also associated rose quartz with love and beauty. According to mythology, the stone was created when Aphrodite's lover, Adonis, was attacked by Ares. When Aphrodite rushed to save him, she was cut by a thorn and her blood mixed with his, turning a piece of white quartz pink. As a result, rose quartz became symbolic of everlasting love and was used to craft jewellery, amulets and decorative objects.

In North America, rose quartz was used by shamans as an effective tool for emotional and spiritual healing. It was thought to open the heart to love and compassion, assisting connection to the higher self, nature and the planet.

Rose quartz is one of the most popular carving stones in Tibet and China. In the modern day, it's used in Feng Shui for strengthening relationships and balancing yin and yang energies.
