Part 2: How to Communicate with Animals Using Telepathy: The Basics (currently reading)
Animal communication was never something I seriously considered, despite a fondness for all animals great and small: from the furry to the scaley and even the creepy crawly. Part of me didn't think I possessed the "gift" or abilities necessary to become a successful pet psychic. Yet the exchange of information through visions, thoughts and feelings isn't much different to the psychic work we're so familiar with.
This article explores how telepathy is used to communicate with animals, including some basic techniques and visualisation practices for heightening intuition. Even as a newbie, I've learned so many eye-opening things about not only my pets, but animals as a whole and their relationship with humanity.
Whether you want to deepen the bond you have with your furries or seek a deeper understanding of nature, we can all agree on one thing: if animals could talk, the world would never be the same.
In this article:

Preparation
Before we start working with our four-legged/feathered/scaley friends, there are some basic rules or ethics we should abide by to get the most fulfilling experience - for you and your animal. In the previous article, I mentioned a book by Pea Horsley that explores every aspect of animal communication. Simple and straight-forward, I highly recommend it as a resource for beginners.

Animal Communication Made Easy by Pea Horsley is essential reading for animal lovers who want to understand their pets. Includes a five-step method to create a deep, spiritual connection with any animal.
If you haven't read Part 1 then you might want to check it out before continuing, as it goes into more detail on how to prepare for a communication session. To recap, here are some important points to note:
1. Respect the Animal
Animals are made of flesh and blood just like us. They have hearts and brains, which means they think and feel. Animals are sentient beings and should never be treated as lesser than a human. Their opinions matter and we should strive to understand, not destroy.
2. Ask for Permission
Animals are individuals and have the same free will that we possess, no matter how much humans try to strip those rights away. If your animal doesn't want to talk, you must respect their wishes and wait for a more convenient time. Animal communication should never be used as a form of control, punishment or discipline.
3. Believe
We already connect with animals on so many different levels. We understand their physical and emotional needs in their behaviours and body language - we might even sense when they're sick or depressed. Animal communication is merely deepening a bond that already exists through intuitive means.
If you want to become a successful animal communicator, it's vital to remove any feelings of self-doubt. This means trusting yourself and accepting whatever information you receive from an animal. Incorrect or inaccurate readings are usually down to blocked intuition.

Intuition
From the Cambridge Dictionary:
"Intuition is an ability to understand or know something without needing to think about it or use reason to discover it, or a feeling that shows this ability."
A more relatable term could be "gut instinct", but why is this important? Tapping into intuition will help not only with animal communication, but trusting that what you receive is true and valid. Think of it as a muscle that needs to be worked and built up: the more it's used, the stronger it becomes.
If our senses were left dormant or inactive then, over time, our memories of things would start to fade - which is exactly what happened to psychic ability. You can exercise any one of your senses right now with this mindfulness technique. Simple but effective, it's widely used in all kinds of psychic work.

Mindfulness Exercise
Take a piece of fruit, such as an apple for ease, and hold it to your nose a moment to absorb its scent. After a couple of minutes, take a bite and really taste it before swallowing. Notice the contrast of its tough, dry skin to the soft and juicy fruit inside. How is the experience different to how you'd normally eat an apple? Does it taste the same as it smells? Does the flavour seem stronger or weaker?
Try the exercise again, this time closing your eyes or using a blindfold. Is the smell/taste enhanced? Would you be able to tell the difference between two brands or types of apples, say a green one and a red one? You can also take a moment to feel the apples. Do they have smooth skin or is it slightly bumpy? Are some firmer, softer or juicier than others?
Now listen to your apple and what it's trying to tell you - okay, I admit that's a joke - but these moments of stillness allow other sounds to flow in that you might not have heard otherwise. Televisions, radios, music and voices all interfere with our ability to hear beyond the buzz of everyday life.

Pay attention to your breathing. Take note of the gentle breeze in the air, the sounds of distant traffic or birds chirping in the trees. Really hone in on your environment without opening your eyes and, eventually, you might start to hear the beating of your own heart.
If you're someone (like me) who finds zoning out difficult, then you can use a focus such as a candle flame or crystal. This helps to soften the gaze and the mind follows.
Note the warmth of the flame or the coolness of the crystal, look at the colours and patterns. Really imagine what it is to be one of those objects, in the same way you could imagine being inside the body or mind of your pet: the different feelings, sensations, thoughts and emotions.
These exercises may not be direct methods of communicating with animals, but to practice the strengthening of our traditional five senses prepares us for heightening our sixth or "psychic" sense.

Discover Your Psychic Powers by Tara Ward is a practical, in-depth guide to psychic development and spiritual growth. It explores all avenues of psychic ability and helpful tools. Packed with techniques and exercises, this is an oldie but a goodie.
Clair Senses
You might be aware of the clair senses: the types of psychic ability that correspond to seeing, hearing, feeling, smelling and tasting. These can apply to both living beings and spirits that have crossed over; as well as the past, present and future.
Clairvoyance (clear seeing) - visions in our mind's eye, also known as the third eye; or seeing spiritual energies.
Clairaudience (clear hearing) - words and sounds in our "inner ear" (thoughts/mind); or messages from Spirit.
Clairsentience (clear feeling) - sensing emotions or physical sensations; gut feelings and hunches.
Clairalience (clear smelling) - odours that don't have a physical source.
Clairgustance (clear tasting) - tasting something that isn't in your mouth.
As well as the traditional senses, there's also claircognizance which translates to "clear knowing". Probably the most well-known psychic ability, this means receiving knowledge of people, places or events, such as premonitions and information that pops into the mind from nowhere.

Delving into the clair senses is an article in itself and may be covered in a later post. What's important is recognising your own dominant style - that is, the main method from which you receive information from the animal you're working with. Animals are very special in the sense that they can adapt to suit our talents, in the same way that spirits will use whatever means are easiest to communicate.
There are lots of psychics and mediums that claim to communicate directly with spirits, so if that's not in your skillset then it's easy to feel inferior or start comparing yourself to others. However, if Spirit recognises that your dominant sense is smell (clairalience) then they might use this to identify themselves or whatever message they wish to convey.
To find out what type of "clair" you are, start by looking at your natural talents and skills. For example, artists and writers are visual people so might work best with clairvoyance (seeing). If you're highly empathic then you could be naturally clairsentient (feeling). A businessman or inventor, someone with powerful foresight, might have heightened claircognizance (knowing).

Once you start practicing or "working" your senses, as with the apple exercise, you might be surprised at what you discover. I always considered myself a visual person, being an artist and writer; as well as a natural empath. With tarot, for example, I use the imagery to create a story or narrative for the basis of the reading.
It therefore made sense that seeing and feeling would be my strengths, yet my dominant sense during animal communication seems to be clairaudience: hearing words that aren't my own, not as physical voices but inner thoughts. The more I practice, the more I'm able to use clairaudience, clairvoyance and (more rarely) clairsentience interchangeably to enhance my readings.
I can only speculate that my clairaudience stems from being naturally quiet. I'm no speaker - throw me into a discussion and I'm more likely to listen and observe. As a loner in both my young and adult lives, I find comfort in silence so it makes perfect sense. Perhaps psychic ability isn't as complex as we humans would believe.

Heart-to-Heart Connection
We know animal communication is achieved through telepathy, and it begins by making a heart-to-heart connection with an animal. Love is the highest frequency of all, not just in a spiritual sense. It's a scientific fact that the heart's electromagnetic field is 5,000 times greater than the brain's. Not only this, but humans are more cognitively advanced than animals and therefore not on the same wavelength.
To establish this connection, we have to be at one with the animal. There is no separation. We're all a part of nature and we all come from Source: this is the basis for any psychic work. Whether you wish to communicate with the living or deceased (spirit) we're all energy and therefore all connected - which makes the notion of telepathy all the more achievable.
Learning to listen with the heart begins by raising your vibrations to a higher frequency in order to align with Source. Animals will sense this energy so, essentially, you become a bright shiny beacon that they'll be naturally drawn to. Remember, high vibrations attract and low vibrations repel.
Low vibrations might include feelings such as anxiety, fear, guilt, shame - not forgetting that pesky devil on your shoulder, aka self-doubt. Even if you're not particularly spiritual, you can still put these things into practice to improve general mood and wellbeing. In fact, I challenge you to try! Open your heart and see where it takes you.
You can use this simple exercise to help, either before a communication session or simply as a bonding experience with your fur baby. If he or she isn't in the room, take a moment to visualise them in your mind: their features, their scent, the softness of their fur. Visualisation techniques are also great for strengthening clairvoyance by opening the third eye chakra.

Heart Chakra Exercise
Find a quiet space and close your eyes. Feel the pulsing of your heart, paying attention to its gentle rhythm until you can hear it beating faintly. You might want to sit with your feet flat against the floor to aid with grounding. Connection to the earth has a calming effect and helps to anchor us in the present moment, which is important for psychic work. Humans are spiritual beings within a physical body: the deeper your roots, the higher your consciousness can soar!
Now imagine your heart opening like a lotus flower, each petal unfurling to reveal a bright glowing light. Let the colour of this light come to you naturally. You might see green to resonate with the heart chakra, pink as a symbolism of love; gold for healing or white for protection.
Send the light into your pet's heart by visualising a beam that connects the both of you. Let them know that they're safe, loved and you'd like to communicate with them. Wait until they give their permission before attempting to start a conversation.
If you feel any kind of resistance, you must respect it and wait for a more convenient time. If you don't receive anything at all then don't be disappointed. It may be that they aren't ready or you haven't honed your senses enough to receive the information. If any words, thoughts or feelings come pouring in then this is a clear sign that they're open and ready to receive!
Renowned animal communicator, Diana Delmonte, suggests that while meditation exercises and techniques are good as a starting point, all you really need to do is think about your animal - which makes things even simpler, in theory. Too simple, perhaps?

Humans have evolved to spend most of their waking days on autopilot. Taking a few moments to be present and in the moment has, sadly, become a chore - something that needs to be slotted into our busy lives. Between working, sleeping, eating and scrolling through social media, anything else is a fleeting thought.
Who amongst you can sit in complete stillness for a whopping 5 minutes? No television, no phone, no computer, no kids - yes, that includes the furry kind. As soon as you get a chance, go ahead and try it. Let the day's thoughts, tasks and problems slip away into a peaceful oblivion and remain there for 5 minutes, 10 minutes, 30 minutes, an hour....
Once you've taken a moment of pause and reflected on your pet, it should be easier to get out of your head by dropping your attention to your heart centre. Literally, allow your focus to fall down into your chest and take a few deep breaths to ground yourself.
There should be no interfering thoughts, but if you find that things are creeping in then allow them to pass through and disperse. Actively trying to block them out means you're focusing on anything but your heart space, which defeats the purpose of the exercise.
Not so easy, is it? Let me know in the comments how it went and how long (or not!) you managed to silence yourself.

Telepathy
Animal communication is another term for animal telepathy, which involves becoming more aware of the images or thoughts in your mind and the feelings in your body. This process begins with a heart-to-heart connection, while the head does the interpretation. We understand that information is delivered through the clair senses, of whichever works best for you.
Yet, how exactly is information transferred from animal language to, well, human language?
Most beginners, including myself, won't understand the mechanisms of HOW telepathy works; only that it DOES work. Telepathy is a form of energy exchange and, as energy is universal, we can safely assume that all human and non-human animals on this planet - from whichever plane of existence - are essentially speaking the same language: the language of energy.
Once you've made that heart-to-heart connection with your pet, you may feel a rush of love or, as mentioned earlier, a feeling of oneness; that there's nothing separating you energetically. Even if you don't feel anything at all, as long as the focus is there and your intention is pure - and you don't sense any kind of resistance - there's nothing stopping you from beginning communication.

Some people like to have their pet in front of them or be in the same room, but this isn't necessary and animals should be free to roam wherever they please. Forcing them into a situation that they don't want to be in isn't a great start, and they likely won't want to continue. Of course, you can always ask your pet if they'd be willing to stick around for the session and see what happens.
Keep them in your mind's eye or look at a photo if it's easier. A lot of pet psychics work remotely from all over the world, so rest assured that there are no limitations or distance restrictions on animal communication. If anything, it may be a case of being in the physical presence of an animal allows for a more personable bond.
Animals are naturally psychic and will hear your call because they're always tuned in - they can even communicate while they're sleeping! Humans, particularly of the Western world, lost touch with their instincts over the generations because they were no longer an essential part of survival. We distanced ourselves from nature, learned to rely on technology and, as children, we're heavily influenced by the opinions and beliefs of our elders.
Once you're ready, you might want to mentally call your pet's name so they know you're trying to communicate - plus, it's only polite. Then it's simply a case of asking whatever questions you want to ask, saying whatever you want to say and trusting the answers you receive. The animal will provide information in the form of visions, thoughts, words, feelings, sensations or emotions.

Visualisation
As touched on throughout this article, we can use images instead of/as well as words to communicate with animals. This may be easier for those who resonate with clairvoyance or want to strengthen their third eye chakra.
As an example, let's say you have an outdoor kitty and it's getting late so you want her to come home. You've called her several times but there's still no sign of her. Form a picture in your mind of her favourite snack, treat or resting place and, once it's clear, place it inside a bubble that floats out of your third eye (forehead between the brows) into the third eye of your kitty.
If you want to mentally inform her that a tasty surprise is waiting then you can do that as well. Keep sending the picture across until, hopefully, you hear the pitter patter of paws running through your back door. If nothing happens then it doesn't mean kitty hasn't heard you. More likely, she's playing ignorant or being kept busy with something more exciting than the treat.
This practice is great for training the mind to open up to receiving images back from the animal as well.

Questions to Ask an Animal
As a starting point, here are some questions and topics that you might want to discuss with your pet:
Are you happy?
Is there anything I can do to improve your life?
Do you have any issues that you want me to be aware of?
Are you in any kind of pain?
Would you like a companion?
Are you feeling stressed?
Why has your behaviour changed?
Why aren't you getting along with your siblings?
Do you enjoy your diet?
How do you feel about my caregiving?
Do you have any advice for me?
What are you here to teach me?
The last two might seem strange but, as we discussed at the beginning of this article, we have much to learn from our furry companions. A fresh perspective on life - other than a human's - could be incredibly eye-opening and awe-inspiring. Animals are sacred beings that humanity fails to appreciate, which sucks for everyone.
Animals seem to be able to see us on a soul level, they know the challenges we've faced and the struggles we go through: past, present and future. Pet psychics will often relay predictions from an animal to their guardian; therefore, if we have any sense then we'll pay attention to what they have to say!
And, yes, I intentionally left out the burning question that all parents want to know: do you love me? All I'll say is ask with caution, and remember that an animal's perspective on love may not match up with your own!

The type of questions you ask will depend on your personal situation and circumstances. Maybe kitty keeps urinating on the floor and you have no idea why, only to find out that she doesn't like the litter you're using.
Maybe you've moved house and your pets aren't settling because they're too stressed out by the changes. Here's your chance to explain exactly what's happened: they won't be returning to their old dwellings, but they're perfectly safe and secure in their new forever home.
The biggest roadblock for me has been trusting what I receive without any tangible proof. Yet the proof is in the results, as you may see with subtle or obvious changes to an animal's behaviour.
Some people find it more difficult talking to their own pets because it's easy to place expectations on the answers, or use knowledge that you already have. Think of animal communication like counselling - sometimes it's easier to talk to those who don't already have an informed opinion of yourself and the person/people or situation you're dealing with.

The best thing to do, after practicing with your own pets, is try communicating with an animal that you have no connection with, such as a friend of a friend. Imagine you've just started a beauty course and want to practice giving facials. Offer your services for free and explain that you're just starting out. That way, no one is expecting purrfection and you can ask for some helpful feedback, too.
As far as my two terrors go (they're actually really good boys apart from recent squabbles) we've made a lot of progress, and I firmly believe that our conversations have played a part. I've been able to understand several misunderstandings between them, make necessary adaptions to their living space and even administer medication without having to restrain anyone - result!
I've learned that Drax has quite the sense of humour, often taking the mickey out of his brother and demanding coffee - one of the biggest no-no's for a cat that you can think of. The joys of telepathy, haha!
You can also communicate feelings in the same way as visualising images. If your cat was frightened by a loud noise, you can send her feelings of safety and security or imagine a warm light surrounding her. If she's persistently clawing the corner of your sofa, let her know by transferring your disappointment - not forgetting that some behaviour can be a result of underlying issues.

Dos and Don'ts
We've discussed the positives and negatives of animal communication as a whole, but what about when it comes to actually talking to the animal? Do we treat them as we would another human being? Are they able to comprehend everything we say? The answer is both yes and no.
To reiterate, communication or telepathy should never be used as a form control or punishment. Cats in particular don't respond to discipline at the best of times, and this will damage your relationship further. We do need to be mindful of how we word things, which is in a similar fashion to how we might converse with children.
That's not to say animals (or children) lack intelligence. If anything, I'd say their ability for logic and reason isn't as advanced as ours: for example, understanding consequences. It'd have to be explained, possibly numerous times, to a child that sticking their finger in a plug socket is not likely to end well! They also have a habit of taking things literally and only focusing on parts of a conversation that they want to hear.
From Pea Horsley's book, Animal Communication Made Easy, she advises not to use negative words including: no, don't, can't, shouldn't. These can cause confusion for our pets and place further emphasis on the undesired behaviour.

An example from my own experience, Simba got into the habit of hissing at his brother whenever they came face to face or wanted to cross paths. In my naivety, I told him over and over again: "Please, stop hissing" or "Don't do that" to no avail.
Regretfully, I didn't take into account his feelings about the situation. With so much trauma from Drax's attacks, he had every right to be pissed off and defensive. Telling him not to hiss is the equivalent to scolding someone for flinching whenever they walk past the school bully. Moreover, it places more and more focus on the undesired behaviour.
If I say don't blink, what are you going to do? Don't try to resist, I know you're itching to blink because you're actively thinking about blinking. The same applies here, so it's best to vocalise only the things that you want an animal to do or remember.
It all goes back to ignorance and treating animals as less important than our own selfish desires. You need to take the time to build a trusting and loving relationship with the animal. Try to understand why it's acting in a certain way and what you can do to help or improve the situation.
Lastly, be sure to close the session by thanking the animal and making your farewells. Leaving a conversation midway is rude and insulting. Bear in mind, too, that if everyone communicated in this fashion then wouldn't the world be a much more kind, loving, respectful and understanding place?
Hey, maybe I'm just dreaming!
